Zoos are pretty wonderful places, but if you read the complete history of zoos you would notice that they are not all that new an invention. You might think that they are a product of globalism and trade and that they would not have been all that possible and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that most people are not all that educated about how the world truly was at a certain point in time. However, the truth of the situation is that zoos are actually not a new concept at all, and in fact they have a pretty rich history.
It should be noted that zoos that are open to the public are only a couple of hundred years old, but the concept of acquiring exotic animals and keeping them in one place is thousands of years old. Ancient civilizations did this to try and display their glory and wealth. It was a sign of dominance as well as a sign that a society was highly advanced, and many rulers had what they called royal menageries which is where the concept of zoos originated.
As time went by, zoos went from displays of power and wealth for rulers to pleasant diversions for the new rich to places where people could go and learn about animals while looking at them and seeing them more or less in their element. However, the rulers of the past were the ones that were responsible for finding exotic animals interesting in the first place. It is interesting to see how some things we take for granted have been part of human society for a very long period of time indeed.
